I came across an older article about the decline of Canada's boreal caribou population. Part of a species considered ubiquitous to Canadian wilderness, some have a hard time believing that these creatures may be at risk of disappearing.

Illegal immigrants, higher education, and conspiracy theories about losing control of a nation

In the past few months, I have read quite a few pieces about high school graduates who came to the United States as infants, or young children. Some came at such a young age that they didn't even realize they were illegal immigrants until just before graduating high school. So what happens when kids like this -- particularly the one's with impressively high GPA's apply for college? They cannot afford to go.

GITD has a very good reason why these kids should not be able to attend university: because they will become lawyers and take over the USA and destroy everything that it is:

Seeing as the website was FOXNews, there were close to 2,000 comments when I read the story. Many were quite fascinating; many started with "This is AMERICA". Yes. Yes it is, if you are writing from America.

The president of Nigeria, Umaru Yar'Adua, has reportedly died. Amazingly, CNN.com's blog post about this has a very high volume of comments that have been left by respectfully mournful, religious Nigerians. Comments like "May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace."

Except for this guy, who is clearly not from Nigeria; probably American?

The pretrial for Omar Khadr, a young Canadian man accused of terrorist acts when he was just 15 years old, has begun in the United States. Khadr was arrested for allegedly throwing a detonating device which killed an American soldier in Afghanistan. He has been imprisoned at Guantanamo Bay for most of the past 8 years.

Canadians are divided over whether it is right to repatriate Khadr; whether a 15-year old should be considered an adult; whether he is a victim of circumstance; and, whether if he is innocent, can he even be rehabilitated after spending 8 years at Guantanamo Bay.

Many people, including Larry O do not reailze that Khadr is even Canadian, and have expressed their fear of foreign people with funny names living in Canada:

Missing the point: Native edition

The following comment isn't awesome in the sense that most people interpret awesome -- as something with some form of merit; it is awesome in the sense that the I am filled with awe at the complete failure for people to understand the issues that they concern themselves with. At first I wasn't sure if I actually wanted to post it on here, because so far, most of the content has been stuff I can sort of chuckle at.

Comments relating to the Aboriginal peoples of Canada, on the other hand, are often the most ignorant and hateful posts that I have ever read. For the most part, I'd like to keep this blog free of much commentary, even though this is obviously not an objectively written blog. I'd rather people come to their own conclusions, without knowing 100% what side I'm on. In this case, I can't be neutral. This comment represents just one out of thousands that represent uneducated views of self-righteous Canadians who do not understand how colonialism has impacted the original inhabitants of their country, and who look at Aboriginals with such disrespect.

The state of Arizona has passed a new immigration law which, for those of you out of the loop, allows law enforcement to practice racial profiling. Basically, if you look like an illegal immigrant and you are stopped by the police in Arizona, you had better have all your identification handy, regardless of your citizenship. There are plenty of reasons why it is good to have a robust list of immigration laws, but I'll let the expert below summarize that in all their capslock glory:
